A growing number of employers are offering
identity theft coverage to their employees.
Employers have started offering the coverage as an
employee benefit to help reduce the amount of work
time lost when an employee becomes a victim. A
consumer whose identity has been stolen spends
about 200 hours calling creditors to restore their
good name, according to industry research. The
theft coverage has ultimately cost some companies
a few dollars per employee, depending on the
company size and level of coverage. Some critics
said companies would do better to direct resources
and attention to fixing workplace security. A
Michigan State University professor's study
suggests that 51 percent of identities are stolen
in the workplace, often by people hired to perform
data entry or other low-level jobs.
